Since 2006, Le Roi Community Foundation has been connecting donors with community needs and opportunities — building strong, resilient, and inclusive communities where everyone thrives.
LE ROI COMMUNITY FOUNDATION • EST. 2006
The Le Roi Community Foundation began in September 2005 with a simple but powerful goal, to support charitable endeavours in the communities of Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Montrose, Fruitvale and Areas A & B of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.
Formally launched in 2006, the foundation was built on the belief that local generosity, carefully stewarded, could create lasting change for generations to come. Donations to the Le Roi Community Foundation are held in a permanent endowment fund. The income generated from this investment is returned to the community in two ways: through grants to registered charities and non-profits working across the region, and through scholarships and bursaries awarded directly to local students pursuing further education.
Giving in perpetuity means that the funds you donate will be around for generations to come. Not just for today's community, but for the community your grandchildren will inherit.
The foundation takes its name from the Le Roi Mine. Its discovery in 1890 sparked the Kootenay gold rush and led to the settlement of our local area, the smelter, the power grid, the railways and roads, and the businesses and services that have supported every community in the region for over 135 years.
Those communities continue to diversify and thrive today. It's a fitting name for a community foundation that enables local generosity to fund annual grants to local charities and scholarships to local students, year after year.
A community foundation is a registered charity that pools large and small gifts and places them in a community endowment fund. The income from that fund is distributed in support of charitable causes, locally, permanently, and in perpetuity. Le Roi Community Foundation is one of more than 200 community foundations across Canada.
The most visible function of a community foundation is making financial grants to local charities. Local volunteers evaluate applications and make decisions based on community needs and available funds across: health, heritage, education, environment and more.
The perpetual nature of a community foundation makes it an appealing place for donors who want to strengthen their community. A community foundation has the skills and tools to help donors achieve their charitable wishes. Now and for generations to come.
As an autonomous, volunteer-driven, and locally focused organization, a community foundation works with charities, local government, and citizens to identify community needs and encourage collaboration and cooperation amongst stakeholders.
From a founding vision in 2005 to surpassing $2 million in total assets, Le Roi Community Foundation has grown steadily through the generosity of local donors and the dedication of volunteer board members.

Le Roi Community Foundation is one of more than 200 community foundations across Canada, supported nationally by Community Foundations of Canada. Here in BC, LCF is also a proud member of Connect BC, a provincial network dedicated to empowering BC's 62 community foundations, boosting their capacity, leadership, and sense of purpose to make a lasting difference in their regions.
Connect BC's vision is straightforward: BC community foundations are the heartbeat and voice of their communities, serving as a vital connection point for positive change and local empowerment. The network is supported by Vancouver Foundation and provides tools, shared resources, and opportunities for foundations to learn from each other and strengthen the broader charitable sector across the province.
In 2025, Le Roi Community Foundation was invited to participate on the Connect BC provincial advisory, one of the few foundations in BC asked to help shape the network's direction. LCF sits on this advisory specifically to add the perspective of a small, volunteer-led foundation, ensuring that communities like ours — from Rossland to Fruitvale — have a voice in provincial decisions that affect local giving.
